Beer Bottle Shape Design and Filling Quality Control (3)–about remaining space (headspace)

About remaining space (headspace)
After the bottle and can are filled, the capacity between the liquid level and the bottle cap is the remaining space, and the ratio of the remaining space to the nominal capacity is the headspace ratio, which is generally determined by the type of content and appearance requirements.
For cans, the distance between the surface of the contents and the lid is generally 6~8mm. If the top clearance is too large, the storage capacity will be insufficient, and there will be a lot of air, which is not good for can storage. If the headspace is too small, the can will be deformed due to the expansion of the content during sterilization, which will affect the tightness of the suture.

beer caps and beer bottle

Since beer is rich in CO2 gas, the remaining space plays an important buffer role. Considering the influence of factors such as ambient temperature and vibration during the filling, pasteurization, storage, transportation and drinking of beer, the top clearance ratio must be guaranteed.
According to the 640mL beer bottle type, the appearance requires that the height between the beer filling liquid level and the bottle cap should be determined at 75mm. Here the headspace ratio is about 4.5%. Beer bottle GB4544-1996 stipulates that the full-mouth capacity of 640mL bottles is 670±10mL, and beer GB4927-2001 stipulates that there is no negative deviation in the quantitative packaging of beer. When the full-mouth capacity of beer bottles is the lower limit of 660mL, the headspace rate drops to about 3%. The cushioning effect of the remaining space is weakened, and it is easy to cause bottle explosion or air leakage.
Therefore, Guilin Jingsheng Glass Co., Ltd. stipulates that the internal control index for the full mouth capacity of 640mL beer bottles is 665~
680mL, and try to reduce the deviation of bottle weight, strictly controlled within the range of 10g/bottle, so as to reduce the deviation range of full mouth capacity. At the same time, Yanjing Beer (Guilin Liquan) Co., Ltd. is required to strictly control the filling height of beer to about 75mm, so as to ensure that the top gap rate is above 4.5%, and reduce the bottle burst rate to a minimum.
It is more necessary for beer bottle companies to supply bottles to beer companies at designated locations, to fix the supply and demand sides, and to cooperate closely. In this way, the quality of beer bottles can be continuously improved, making it a good beer bottle supply base for beer companies.
For beer bottles with a capacity greater than 640mL, the position of the liquid level line (that is, the remaining space) meets the appearance requirements, and the headspace rate will be lower than 4.5%, which is easy to burst the bottle; while for beer bottles with a capacity of less than 640mL, the headspace ratio will be less than 4.5%. The space is easy to meet the appearance requirements, and the top gap rate can be guaranteed to be above 5%. In addition, the outer diameter of the bottle body is small, and the bottle itself has good internal pressure resistance, so the bottle burst rate is very low, and the product safety is high. It is recommended that breweries try to choose small-capacity beer bottles.
